Anyone who's cleared a driveway in Regina knows that snowfall is only part of the problem. You can finish shovelling the front walk in the afternoon, only to find the wind has covered it again by morning.
Regina receives an average of 116 cm of snow each year, according to the City of Regina. With snow possible from October through April, there's plenty to keep up with. And for homeowners, some of that work is required by City bylaws.
The City requires property owners to clear snow and ice from public sidewalks bordering their property. If you live on a corner lot, you're responsible for the public sidewalks along both sides.

According to the City's guidelines, the clearing deadline begins when snow or rain stops falling, or when the wind stops blowing snow onto roads and sidewalks.
In Regina, wind can be the bigger problem. Snow might stop falling at noon but continue drifting across your sidewalk well into the evening. You also need to deal with snowdrifts or ice that build up between storms. The City can require those areas to be cleared even without a new snowfall.
The City expects an even, walkable surface, cleared to the sidewalk edges and as close to the concrete as possible.
Snow from public sidewalks can be placed on your property or along the adjoining curb, provided it doesn't interfere with traffic. Snow from private driveways and walkways must stay on your property. Don't shovel or blow snow into the driving lane.
If your sidewalk isn't cleared within the required time, the City may issue a Notice of Non-Compliance. If the work still isn't done, the City can arrange for clearing and add the cost to your property taxes.
For rental properties, the property owner remains responsible under the City's bylaw, even when the tenant normally handles the shovelling.
Most of these are straightforward, but a few habits can save a lot of work over the winter.
Fresh snow is easier to move than snow that's been driven over for a couple of days. Once tire tracks compress it, particularly when temperatures rise and fall, you're dealing with a much tougher job.
During a heavy snowfall, clearing the driveway in stages can be easier than tackling the whole thing at once.
A regular shovel works well for steps and short walkways. A snow pusher is useful on flat surfaces, while a snow blower can save time on larger driveways.
Push the snow rather than lifting it when you can. If you're shovelling heavy snow, take smaller loads and avoid twisting your back.
On a bitterly cold day, there's no harm in splitting the job into two rounds and warming up between them.
That pile beside the driveway might look fine in November. By February, it could be taking up more room than you'd expected.
Keep piles away from entrances and places where they could block visibility when backing out.
If you're using a snow blower, watch where the snow lands. You don't want to bury a neighbour's walkway or create another problem to clean up.
Snow that melts during the afternoon and refreezes overnight can leave front steps and walkways dangerously slippery.
Sand can improve traction, while some ice-melting products help under suitable conditions. Follow the product instructions, particularly around concrete and landscaping.
Regina discontinued its public sandboxes on January 1, 2026. If you previously collected free sand from the City's boxes, you'll need to find another source this winter.
Few things are more frustrating than finishing your sidewalk and seeing it covered again after the street is plowed.

If you've hurt your back, have trouble lifting heavy snow, or simply can't manage a large driveway after a storm, get someone to help.
Regina has a Snow Angels program in participating neighbourhoods. Local community associations coordinate volunteers who help residents facing barriers to snow removal.

If your driveway is short and you don't mind the work, clearing it yourself is usually the cheapest option.
A snow removal service becomes more appealing when you leave early for work, travel during winter, or have a driveway that takes a long time to clear.
With a seasonal plan, you already have a company scheduled to come after snowfall. You're not trying to find someone every time the weather turns.

Our snow removal team uses its own tractors, Jeeps and equipment. We don't subcontract the work to another snow removal company.
On a typical snow removal day, our crews start around 5 a.m. Routes are usually finished between 1 and 3 p.m., depending on the snowfall and conditions.
We commit to clearing scheduled properties within 24 hours after the snowfall ends.
For most Regina homes, that's a shorter period than the City's 48-hour sidewalk clearing deadline. You'll still need to make sure the public sidewalk is included in your plan and address any ice or drifting snow that requires attention between visits.
We send a pre-service email before a scheduled snow removal visit and another after the work is completed.
Once our winter routes are established, we generally arrive around the same time of day after snowfalls, although heavy snow and changing conditions can affect the schedule.

Regular billing runs monthly from November through March, or you can pay for the full season upfront.
